What has been tested, and what has not

Everything below is a published result on the parent material — the mineral wool byproduct every SecondLife material is separated from. None of it is a measurement of an individual stream. We state it that way deliberately, because a buyer who discovers the distinction during qualification has been misled.

Composition of the parent material

Published in 10X Engineered Materials' Safety Data Sheets for EpiX, KinetiX and DynamiX, all revised 23 April 2024. The composition is identical across those products because nothing is added downstream: it is a property of the melt, which is why it carries to every separated stream. Weight percentages are for the parent material and have not been re-assayed per stream.

Published results on the parent material

Each statement below is 10X Engineered Materials' determination on its own products, cited to the document it comes from. We publish them here because the melt is the same; we do not present them as measurements of a SecondLife stream.

Crystalline silica was not detected

The regulated crystalline forms of silicon dioxide — quartz, cristobalite and tridymite — have not been detected in multiple tests of the parent material using NIOSH Method 7500 at an analytical reporting limit of 0.1%.

The material is an amorphous glass

The granted US patent covering this material characterises it as a non-metallic solid formed from greater than 99% amorphous glass containing less than 0.1% quartz, tridymite or cristobalite.

Leachate testing across the eight RCRA metals

The parent material has been tested under EPA Method 1311 (TCLP) across all eight RCRA metals. Barium came back at 0.217 mg/L against a 100 mg/L regulatory limit, and mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, selenium and silver were all below the detection limit of the method.

Aquatic toxicity bioassay

Tested by Washington State Department of Ecology Method 80-12, a 96-hour acute fish toxicity test, the parent material produced zero mortality at both 10 mg/L and 100 mg/L.

Carcinogenicity classification of the parent material

The material composition matches slag wool, a subclass of mineral wool. In 2001 an IARC working group reviewed decades of human epidemiological and animal toxicological studies and classified insulation glass wool, continuous glass filament, rock (stone) wool and slag wool as Group 3 — not classifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans. Slag wool is not listed by the US National Toxicology Program.

Physical properties of the parent material

Specific gravity 2.7 to 2.9. Melting point approximately 1,150 °C. Insoluble in water. Non-flammable. Colour black to grey.

Recovered content

Every SecondLife Minerals material is made entirely from recovered post-industrial mineral content — a byproduct of mineral wool insulation manufacturing that would otherwise be landfilled, with no virgin mined or smelted input.

What 10X's abrasive certifications do not cover

10X Engineered Materials holds product qualifications for its abrasive products. Those qualifications are specific to those abrasive products and do not extend to SecondLife Minerals materials, which are not abrasives. We will not cite them in support of these materials, and you should not accept them as evidence for these materials.
